What to Expect in the First Year

The first year of college is full of adjustments, joys, challenges, and  surprises, not just for students, but for their parents and families as well. While each family's first year at Georgetown is unique, you can use the resources here to learn more about what to expect in the first year.

Todd Olson, Vice President of Student Affairs has compiled a list of suggested books and online articles that discuss this transition. One article in particular we would like to highlight is, "Beginning the College Years: Challenges for New Students and their Parents" by Wayne Hurr, Ph.D. and Staff Psychologist at Georgetown's Counseling and Psychiatric Service.

Finally, this chart provides an overview of the typical events in the life of many first-year students at Georgetown. Not all students will participate in all of these events, but this is a general overview of the events and experiences on the Hilltop.

New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation (NSO) is an introduction to life at Georgetown. NSO is for both first year students and transfer students. NSO begins with move-in on Friday, August 22 and Saturday, August 23th, 2008. NSO activities for all new students starts on Saturday and continues until classes begin the following Wednesday. Financial Aid and Student Accounts

The Office of Student Financial Services works to make it financially possible for every qualified applicant to enroll at Georgetown University so that we can recruit and retain a talented and diverse learning community. Student Financial Services has a variety of information including:

The Office of Student Accounts deals with University tuition and other issues related to paying for your student's education at Georgetown University. Parents and family members may access their Student's account through StudentAccess+ if given authorization by the student. StudentAccess+ provides student's and family members with a number of functions at their fingertips, including viewing the student bill, payment of the student bill, and submission of a Student Health Insurance waiver or acceptance. Living on-campus

The Office of Student Housing (Housing Office) is responsible for providing a comfortable, safe, and stable environment within which students can confront experience personal and intellectual development. The Office of Housing Services uses an online program called CHARMS (Campus Housing Roommate Matching System) which allows students the opportunity to select their own roommate if they choose to do so. A student is not required to participate in this program. If preferred, the Housing Office will match the student with a roommate based on the answers to the questions on the Living Preference Questionnaire.
